Default Adding length with longer clubs

I am a stocky senior with relatively short arms. In my backswing, my arms rarely get beyond the 11 o'clock, with 9 being parallel. I have observed that by letting my rear elbow "fly" slightly behind and away from my side in the backswing, I am able to increase my rearward turn and thereby increase the length of my backswing and ball flight. The problem comes when I make the turn back to the ball, the club face often does not return to square before contact and I hit long pushes. By trial and error, I have found that by focusing on keeping pressure my lead foot, I make a more complete pivot and strike the ball squarely. My question, just how much rearward "fly" movement of rear elbow away from the side is advisable? Gust

The elbow flying out is not the problem. The problem is in the downswing. After you make contact with the golf ball the clubhead has to return on an arc.

After you make contact your clubhead goes straight towards the target. Make sure you turn through to the left after impact.
