Should I get special clubs for tall people, and if so, what do I do? I'm 6'4" and always feel like I'm stooping way over when I play, but maybe that's how it should feel. I believe you when you say that mechanics of play are more important than getting lots of expensive equipment, but since in a way I'm starting out, using your method, what would you suggest I do?

Very simple. Go to your local range / pro shop. Try a few irons. Forget the driver for now. They'll let you swing clubs that are long enough for you. You might start hitting fat shots. That's expected after stooping so low for so long. Straighten your spine. Bend at the hips/ waist, not along your back. Swing away. Test with a 6 iron. Once you find the club that feels the smoothest thru the swing, and when it makes clean contact, you feel a slight tick, and not a fat slap, and the ball goes where you were aiming, with a nice lofty ball flight, then you have the right club. The club fitter will then put tape on the sole and make you swing off a plastic surface, clearly marking the sole with the contact point and angle, then give you a club that has a more closely matching lie and loft, and narrow it down to an accurate measurement: length, loft and lie. I suspect you might be around 1-1/2" over standard length (or more) and 1 degree up for lie, depending on the club you choose. Trust me, it's worth it. Your back will thank you. Your whole outlook and skill level will improve drastically. Once you have your measurements, you can go look for clubs with those specs (good luck!) or order them new from the best source.

You have to get professionally fitted. Because you do not fall in the "average" height for the clubmakers, you need longer equipment. You can go to a couple of internet sites and stactic fit yourself...It works.
