How can i get a divot?

I always try to get a divot but the ball is always between the divot. I know the ball should be the start of the divot. Are there any drills i should do to be able to get a good divot?

Are you hitting the ground first?

When using irons, many times I'll strike the ground and inch in front of the ball. If I move the ball back in my stance, I'll start shanking.
