More distance out of long irons

Does anyone have any tips to get more distance out of the long irons? I tend to hit my 5 iron longer than I can my 3 iron. I can hit it straight. Just seriously lacking distance and power. I actually got to a point where I no longer use my 3 iron and would like to again. Any help would be appreciated.

That is the very reason long irons have been replaced with hybrids. If you hit your 5 iron 90% and your 3 iron 75%, your 5 iron will go further.

What happens to the golf ball when you mishit the 5 iron, hook, thins, fades etc. Let me know.
