I am not making any real progress with my swing for my woods and irons, even though I endeavour to follow your instruction. When the club returns to the ball, I rarely hit the ball in the sweetspot. I either hit the ball towards the toe of the club or just inside the heel. The ball either goes left or right of centre but I cannot work out what I am doing wrong. When the ball goes straight down the fairway, the ball will suddenly turn right in the last few seconds of travel and finish off the fairway. If the ball goes left, it tends to draw left particularly after ground impact and once again go into the rough. As you can gather, I spend a lot of time recovering from the rough as best as I can.
I'm a rookie golfer too, having just started in the spring of this year. Two things have helped me hit the ball more consistently: keeping the left arm long through the backswing, and keeping the right arm/elbow tucked close to the body in the downswing. I had to really pay attention to these points, doing slow motion swings to make sure that I kept those arms in the right positions, but as I've gotten better at doing them, my shots are better as a result. ( your mileage may vary).

Many thanks Greg. I shall concentrate on what you suggest and see if there is any improvement over time. JJ
Jake let's start with your lofted irons. When you hit your 9-8-7irons what are the results? Do you hook, pull, fade or hit straight shots?
Let me know.

Bobby,
I hit these short irons mainly straight but I do get the occasional pull to the left and the very occasional ball going right quite markedly. Once again I am not hitting the ball in the sweet spot with any regularity. With the seven and eight irons, I just cannot get any power behind the ball as I don't think that I am hitting down on the ball enough. Jake
Bobby,
I have not got your reply as yet. I joined the Apprentice Program on 9 Dec 08 and I am still waiting for your first response to my first question. Jake
Jake,
If you're in Bobby's apprentice program, you might get better response in the forum that's linked to the apprentice area. I do suspect that because it's winter here in the northern hemisphere and the posts are few that the site admin's aren't paying as much attention to the forums. Plus it's a few days before Christmas too!
(not so) patiently waiting for spring,
Greg
When you say you are not hitting the ball on the sweet part, where are you striking the golf ball on the club face? The toe, the heel, etc. Let me know.

Hi Bobby,
Sorry for not getting back to you earlier but my computer came down with a virus on 29 Dec 08. My computer has only just been repaired. In answer to your query, I hit my short irons mainly half way between the sweet spot and the toe or on the toe. Today I was hitting behind the ball taking a divot well before hitting the ball. Can you tell me which of your training video clips I should concentrate on. Cheers, Jake
