Hello Mr. Eldridge, I've got a question that you maybe able to help me with. I am a lefty who plays right handed. Thus you would think I'd have an advantage, but no, due to my right hand. I can hit the ball better when I place my right hand over my left (not cross-handed, just a weak grip), but, I know that isn't a good grip or the best way to swing the club. Could you give me an idea of the true role the right hand should play, and what I can do to minimize this hand position and use a more standard grip. The grip also results in backward broken left wrist after impact, which seems unatural. Any tips that you can provide will be greatly appriciated.
If your right hand is really weak and your able to hit it well, we can assume that some manipulation is being made near impact. Those manipulations are hard to re-create on a consistent basis.
The weak right hand will make it hard to square the clubface at impact, forcing you to flip or cast. The clubface will stay open for too long and to compensate you bend the left wrist at impact (among other things). The ideal hand position at impact is: flat or bowed left wrist, hinged right wrist allowing the shaft to lean towards the target. Because of the weak grip, its hard for your to achieve this.
Try the tee drill to work on your grip:
Grip a club and have someone place a tee in the 'V' of each hand. The V is the crease created by the thumb and index finger. Once the tees are there, see which way they are pointing. Ideally, the tees will line up in a pretty straight line. If they point in different directions, your hands can't work together. For you, try to line them up on the right side of the grip, helping you feel a stronger grip. This should give you a little help squaring the clubface at impact.
Grip changes are tough, stick with it and hopefully you will see that bent left wrist at impact disappear. Keep us updated on your progress...
