Default Can't Hit Short Shots Out of Thick Rough

Lately I've found myself off to the side of a green in thick rough and duffed the shot. Used my sand wedge and duffed the shot twice. I'm a 10 HC and consider myself a decent player but this is frustrating! Ant tips?

is the club face open or closed? is this like a lob type shot? The rough is usually too thick for that.
