Default 20 yd bunker shot in heavy sand

From bunkers with relatively heavy sand, I have difficulty in guaging the depth that my wedge enters the sand under the ball to get the necessary force to move the ball well out on to the green. Striking the sand two inches behind the ball gets me out of the trap, but I often enter too deeply and the ball just pops up on to the edge of the green. Is it likely that I am swinging too steeply? Thanks

You are swinging too steep. However, wet heavy sand is difficult to gauge distance. A couple of ideas.

Make sure your weight is EVENLY distributed. If you have too much weight on your left side the angle will be too steep.

I must warn you about one thing. Most people are too SHALLOW in heavy sand. If you start to shallow the angle you might blade the ball too far.
