Default Stopping on a dime

Hello Bobby,
I have just read an email from David Nevogt where he says that trying to get the ball to check up, take a hop foreward and stop on a dime is a better option than trying get it to backspin. As I never seem to hit shots past the flag intentionally this seems a good idea. How do you do it?
Regards
Mike
