Chipping Downswing

The leading edge of the golf club has to swing down into the ground in the downswing.(#22) Part 1-5 have put you in a position to do this. Everything leading up to this moment allows the golf club to swing into the ground and under the golf ball.

As the golf club is swinging back down into the back of the golf ball the leading edge of the golf club can dig after in reaches the bottom of the arc or it can bottom out and begin to swing back up. If you stay on the correct path in the downswing the club will continue to dig.

Chop the Ground with the Clubhead

If the leading edge of the golf club digs into the ground the golf ball will strike the center of the golf club and the golf ball will have the correct loft on the way to the green. Remember, chop, not stop.(#23 - 25)

Common Chipping Mistakes

The top four mistakes in chipping come from the leading edge of the golf club not digging into the ground under the golf ball. If the golf club arrives too much from the inside, the leading edge will not dig. The bottom of the golf club will bounce off of the ground and the leading edge will strike the middle of the golf ball. The chopping motion will make the leading edge dig into the ground for a more solid contact with the golf ball.(#26)
