Lesson #5: Keeping the Head Down
Let's face it. There are too many things going on in the golf swing to keep your mind on each one of them. We've found success with the PurePoint Golf Techniques because we've condensed the golf swing into the things that really matter in the swing.
Keeping your head down on the ball is definitely one of those things. It's one of the fundamentals that we teach in our full swing DVD, and it's very important. But as Bobby is about to explain in the video below, you can't leave your head down too long after the ball is gone. This will hinder your ability to complete an effective follow through.
One thing that we suggest in the full swing DVD is to keep your head down on the ball - even after the ball is gone. This is a great drill to practice. This is what happens in most cases after this drill is completed- the golfer starts to focus on keeping their head down, and they start to realize that they've been looking up too early all along. They start to realize that it's possible to watch only the ball (the area the ball was resting), even after the ball is gone, and still hit a good shot. In most cases, ball striking improves immensely.
Now, we are not trying to say that you should do this on the course. Again, that would hinder your ability to complete an effective follow through. But what we teach is that you should let your body force your head up. This will happen completely naturally. There is a fine line between lifting your head too early and too late, but if you let your body make this happen naturally, you'll see improved results.
The first step is to actually watch the area where the ball was lying (after you've made impact). Get used to doing that. Then start to let your head naturally come up with your body. This will do many good things for your swing.
