RE: Downswing
QUESTION:
Bobby; do you have a drill that will help me "fire the right side" to start the downswing? Any help will be appreciated.
Thank you
Roland
Asked by Roland Ryan on 2006-11-21 12:29:00
ANSWER:
Thanks for your email Roland. Try this the next time out.
#1 make sure AS you start the club down that you turn your LEFT hip out of the way.
#2 by turning the left hip out of the way in the downswing this will help generate club head speed into the ball.

RE: Downswing
QUESTION:
Bobby
I watched the video lesson where you talked about the left hip turning around your body on the downswing when using the driver. Is this same movement done with irons? I've been struggling with good contact with my irons. I think my shoulder turn is too flat. How do I get a slightly steeper shoulder turn and how does that relate to the turn of the left hip. Also, in regard to the straightening of the right arm on the downswing, does the straightening occur sooner or later with the driver compared with irons...sooner or later with irons compared to the driver?
Thanks
Bill

ANSWER:
Thanks for your e-mail…The left hip is the same for every club. If you think you should swing a bit steeper, move in one inch closer to the golf ball at address. The right arm straightens out the same for every club.

RE: Advise
QUESTION:
Hi David
I have tried introducing some aspects of the simple golf swing into my game. I have stuck with the set up of bending over at the hips to address the ball. I have tried to use the swing but find it did nothing for my game and have since gone back to my old swing…….basically I have had a bad 6 weeks of golf since trying to introduce the simple golf swing into my current game, and my confidence has dropped to an all time low. In one round alone I had every fault you could think of, scalf, topping, slicing etc all appeared during the round.
At the moment I do not feel I am hitting through the ball, and not following through, I seem to be hitting the ground a lot before the ball…..basically not going too well at the moment.
Any suggestions on what I can work on.
My handicap at the club is officially 25, but through the summer last year I was averaging 18, and had rounds of 9 and 13 over, now it is up in the 30's.
Please advise.
Regards,
Peter

RE: Easily Add 20 Yards to your Irons
QUESTION:
Does starting the down swing with the arms contradict your theory of staying connected and keeping the triangle throughout the entire swing? Is your advice similar to the thought of keeping your back to the target as long as possible? The "Simple Swing" is getting complicated.

ANSWER:
Thanks for your e-mail…something has to swing back to hit the golf ball. Yes, keep your back to the target as long as possible. However, you have to start the downswing with your right arm unhinging.

RE: RE: Downswing
QUESTION:
Thanks for your email.
The problem is that when I feel like I am aiming left, I actually hit it left. However, I am not aiming left I am aiming straight. As I am used to aiming right and pulling the ball onto target, I am now aiming straight and pulling the ball left of the target.
I don't know what the feeling should be on my down swing, as I am so used to pulling the ball. Can you recommend any drills I can practice to stop myself from doing this?
Thanks
Kev

Thanks for your e-mail…if you are still pulling the ball, try this the next time out…hold on tighter with your left hand during the entire swing.

RE: Generate More Power at Setup
QUESTION:
Dear David,
Thank you for the simple swing theory. I have reduced my handicap from 8.4 to 6.7 in last two months. I attribute to more constant tee and approach shots that I learned from your instructions.
I am currently experiencing a problem, and wonder if you have any suggestions. I am left handed and one or twice a round I will block a shot to the left? My normal flight shot is left to right (hook) but this block or push is normally straight? Any thoughts or ideas to eliminate?
Thanks, Michael
Asked by mike cole on 2006-08-01 07:04:00
ANSWER:
Thanks for your e-mail…the one thing you might do is NOT turn thru...in the downswing the right hip must turn backwards as you swing your arms down, if the right hip moves towards the target the arms will not release and you will block your shot.

QUESTION:
I guess lesson #4 is where my problem lies. I never can get myself to finish the shot, I seem to be hitting at the ball and not through the ball to finish. Do you have any drills that would change the way I approach the ball to hit to a finish? All the shots end up in the right ruff.

QUESTION:
David,
Thank you for the ongoing mails and updates, they're really helpful. One thing I am struggling with is the rotation of left wrist on to the right (I'm left-handed) at impact. Turning the left wrist would also turn the club head, in my own mind I'm finding it hard to reconcile this. Can you give me some more insight as to why this does not happen?

Philip

QUESTION:
Hi Bobby
I have received the new DVD it looks great, but I have one question. I can come to the right position on the back swing and down again but with no power. I do not know when to apply the power. When I do it late in the down swing I miss the ball or lose control of my body. Do I use my trailing arm to give it the last power?
Thank you in advance.
Asked by Peter Siggaard on 2006-12-06 14:55:00
ANSWER:
Thanks for your e-mail…you generate club head speed in the downswing…with your trailing arm. The power comes from the top of the backswing all the way down to the ball.

RE: The Simple Golf Swing - Setup Chapter
QUESTION:
Dave,
I have purchased your book, and am trying to figure out how this swing is different from a conventional swing? My biggest issue seems to be casting with my right shoulder as the first move. How can I break myself of this? Do I need to think about the wrist turnover or does this happen naturally?
I have not been able to hit the range yet, but I think today is the day.
Thanks,

RE: Question for Bobby --wrist cocking
QUESTION:
I received the upgraded DVD's -- great, really good quality.
I would very much appreciate it if you would kindly advise me as to the following question:
At what point does one deliberately cock the left wrist & hinge the right wrist back (waiter tray mode) during the backswing, and do you then hold this wrist position into the impact zone while the right arm is gradually straightening during the downswing? Or is it, forget about wrist cocking, just let it happen naturally?
Thank you

Asked by JWA on 2006-12-13 12:35:00
ANSWER:
The wrists do not begin to fold in the backswing until the club passes the parallel to the ground position. If you hook, hold on a bit longer, if you slice let it go earlier.

RE: Staying Connected
QUESTION:
David,
I'm 63 and my flexibility is only fair, about 75 degrees. QUESTION #1 - Should I continue to move my arms back "a little" even after my shoulders stop, or do I stop my arms when my shoulders stop?
I'm right handed with a tendency to fade, not slice. For example, my drive would come to rest less than 15 yards right of center --- bad, but not awful. But if I start my downswing with my arms, I hit a really straight ball. The problem is it definitely feels like an arm-swing - i.e. very straight but not as powerful. QUESTION #2 - Does it sound like I'm over-doing the arm-swing (delaying the body turn too long), or is the loss of power the cost of hitting it straight?
Thank you, Sonny.
Asked by Althouse13 on 2007-01-29 10:26:00
ANSWER:
Thanks for your e-mail…The swing is more arms than body..the body complements the arms swinging. You still must turn the body in the downswing…Arms first then body. In the back swing, you do not have to continue swinging the arms after the shoulder stops turning.

QUESTION:
Bobby I really enjoy your tips and have been working on a couple to help my game. My biggest problem is with my down swing & coming over the top causing the ball to start out left and turning to the right. I have a hard time with the woods. But the irons will go straight left without any fade to them. Do you have a drill or swing thought I can use to start correcting this? I have been struggling with this for a year.

RE: question#1
QUESTION:
On the downswing, what is the first move... is it your left hip or the arms dropping or....??? I've read Hogan's book and the whole thing has become a bit confusing actually. On the backswing.... what actually starts the club back? Is it your hands? The turning of the hips? One piece takeaway? Can you describe this as well; what does the right hand do at impact? The club head is not actually released until after impact - correct? Man - you were right when you said that you can't think about all this stuff once the club is in the right position at the top of your backswing; I liked your drill with your feet together and swinging the club; this really gives you the turning feeling.... Give me a few of your thoughts... thx, rh
